You may have seen atleast once 'SMOKING IS INJURIOUS TO HEALTH' in TV or OTT or Social Media.
You may have also noticed that cigarettes packs come with 80% pictorial graphics of health warning saying – Tobacco causes cancer or smoking causes cancer.
Infact, passive smoking also causes cancer.
But the main question is – inspite of knowing all ill-effects, why people are not relinquishing smoking? Maybe they don’t have the same fear as compared to consuming cyanide accidentally. This is because cyanide poisoning is a quick-acting poisoning with fatal implications, while smoking is not that fast-acting poison.
Similarly, Type-2-Diabetes is also not a fast-acting-fatal disease. It’s a slow acting once but it’s partner in crime in almost majority of the TOP-10 diseases globally. Human mind is such a phenomenon which can achieve the unthinkable. Unfortunately, human mind is being tricked that smoking or type-2-disease is a chalta hai types…
I think Diabetes is now beyond a ‘ticking time bomb’. Diabetes is the fastest spreading non-communicable epidemic in India in terms of medical per se but on a psychological level, I feel it a type of communicable disease because the patient with diabetes is so confident that ‘even with his condition becoming worse in future, nothing much will happen to him/her. They feel science is so advanced that it can be cured or maintained any time even if it becomes chronic in future’.
I think this is a general thinking of living in a fool’s paradise. Such notions, tricks their own human mind & others around them in getting toa pseudo-confidence zone that Diabetes cannot be lethal.
I feel this is the main reason why Type-2-Diabetes is exploding in India and elsewhere in the world.
Through tech-enabled monitoring or through overall life-style modification of the diabetes patients, we can just hitting the tip of the iceberg. World needs an effective awareness campaign on what is a healthy lifestyle & it’s benefits; and what is unhealthy lifestyle which can lead to Pre-diabetes and Type-2-diabetes (mild/chronic) & what are it’s immediate implications. Until, this is achieved, no technology or policies can stop diabetes in India & elsewhere.
The estimated number of diabetes patients in the 20-79 age group in India is 7.42 crore in 2021 with a total population of ~140 crores. However, the number of diabetic patients are likely to increase to 12.48 crore by 2045 in India. In 2000, total diabetic patients were on 3.17 crore but in those times, India topped the world with the highest number of people with diabetes mellitus followed by China (2.08 crore) with the United States (1.77 crore) in the 2nd and 3rd place respectively.
